Trolleybus operated on the streets on rubber tires and powered by electricity drawn from two overhead wires by trolley poles. The vehicles would be almost silent, emission-free and far cheaper to install than trams, which are being considered as an option to the thousands of buses running up and down the busy street.
The 13 km. trolleybus line connected Kathmandu and the satellite towns of Madhyapur Thimi and Bhaktapur to the east of the Capital. Technically speaking this was an interurban line. The trolleybus system was opened in 1975, by way of utilizing technical expertise and a grant of 40 million Nepali Rupees, provided as a gift by the government of the People’s Republic of China. 22 standard Chinese trolleybuses were also provided, adapted to left-handed operation. Additional technical support was granted by China in 1986. Also, 10 additional Chinese vehicles were given to Nepal in 1997. The line used to be operated by the government-run Nepal Trolley Bus Service (NTBS), a branch of the Nepal Transportation Corporation (NTC). In 2001, however, the NTC was dissolved and the trolleybus operation was suspended, as it did not turn any profit since 1990. The reasons for NTC’s failure were stringent government bureaucracy and overstaffing, coupled with cronyism in management that resulted in poor technical expertise and inept operational policy.
This bus provides services to about 88% of the people traveling between Kathmandu and Bhaktapur. These buses operate 16 hours per day. Due to poor management it led to a situation where the employees became wealthy, and the corporation became poor. The overstaffing and low productivity sandwiched the poor corporation taking all the juice out of it and reduced its financial viability. Sadly, a system that once promised so much collapsed and in December 2001, after 27 years of its operation.
CHANCES OF COMEBACK:
Trolley buses run with onboard electricity not with fossil fuels. The money spent on buying fossil fuels like petrol and diesel can be saved by utilizing the country’s own abundant source of hydroelectricity. In addition to that, trolley buses are quieter, smoother, cleaner, and accelerate. For many municipalities, there is another strong argument for the trolleybus: electric vehicles cut the most significant and hotly debated emissions, such as nitrogen oxides and CO2, to zero. The most familiar challenge for electric buses is energy storage. A modern battery is around 100 times heavier than the equivalent diesel fuel. In practice, this means that the electric vehicle can either carry significantly fewer people or has a much shorter range than its diesel Drive. The challenge of refueling electrical energy is equally tough: spending one minute filling up a tank of diesel is equivalent to spending around 100 minutes charging an electric bus! Second issue in Nepal is about charging station. We don’t have sufficient charging station and construction of these stations is too expensive. Third and important issue is about price of vehicle and battery disposal issue. Comparatively price of electric bus is three times the price of diesel bus & we don’t have sufficient infrastructure for battery disposal or recycle. Trolleybuses offer crucial advantages in precisely these areas, thereby helping to optimize the use of electric buses in Kathmandu.
To make pollution free transportation, trolley can be the best option for Kathmandu. There is no sense of focusing on Electric Bus & metro/mono rail. Government must rethink in these issues.
